Birth Skills Workshop

Last month, I was lucky enough to attend and observe an amazing birth preparation workshop designed and run by two beautiful midwifes in Christchurch. Now I am even more happy to let you know that they will come to teach in Nelson!

If you wish to attend an ultimate workshop to set your mind and prepare you with skills for birthing you need to check this program out! Regardless of weather you wish to birth at a hospital, primary birthing unit or home, this course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to know how, what and when.

Opti-mum is a mindfully designed childbirth education approach with a twenty first century twist, enabling you to focus on the mind-body connection in order to facilitate optimal health for pregnancy, birth and parenting.

Most childbirth and parent education occurs towards the end of pregnancy. This program is designed to start these wonderful practices at an earlier stage into your journey. It is ideal because it offers greater opportunity to integrate the tools you learn during your pregnancy, providing more powerful opportunities and space to build them into every day routine, so they can became your second nature.

I loved how this class was offering learning with a unique approach through discussion, interaction and reflection with professional midwives, educators and mindfulness practitioners providing your premium learning experience.

Through the class they support you to thread together key elements so you can create a positive and rewarding mindful birth journey. This means you will be guided from a place of anxiety, fear or simply curiosity, to one where you will be informed, empowered, excited and relaxed.

Your one day Birth Skills Workshop includes:

  • Understanding how your hormonal system can help or hinder labour and birth
  • What to expect at each stage of labour
  • How to create the optimal birthing environment
  • Making mindful decisions so you’re in control
  • Preparing partners and birth companions for their important role in the labour and birthing room.
  • Providing you with tools that will help you to optimise the ‘rest and digest’ hormones during labour and birth.
  • Introducing you to a range of skills that will help to keep you focused during labour and birth.
  • Defining ‘birthing in awareness’ and the importance of this concept in becoming parents
  • Navigating obstacles
  • Reducing anxiety/stress, increasing calm and confidence
  • Focused and non-focused awareness exercises to invite and embrace labour sensations

This may be your first time birthing, or you may have already been through pregnancy but desire a different approach. Women who attend Opti-mum consider this an investment that will determine the quality of their birth experience.

“I attended Opti-mum because I wanted a more insightful and meaningful antenatal experience in the lead up to my first born baby. Opti-mum was exactly what I’d hoped for. The breathing techniques, mindful approach and hospital prep I found particularly helpful. I also found the discussions took away a lot of the fear I had around the birth experience which I didn’t receive in the other antenatal classes I attended — Bec Williams

“I credit a lot of my natural easeful birth to the knowledge and skills I gained in the Opti-Mum course. The combination of scientific and intuitive evidence enabled me to look positively at birth and enabled me to prepare for labour mindfully and proactively. With the techniques and confidence I gained in the course I was able to remain calm and empowered throughout my entire labour – and be completely present when our beautiful little girl arrived in my arms. I cannot recommend this course enough … if you do just one ante-natal preparation class, this should absolutely be it!! — Alex + Tim

“You did a 1:1 workshop with me and my husband Mark late last year. My previous baby was posterior and I’d had very long hard labour. I employed all your physical exercises and birthed baby Henry in a short 3hour labour. He was 4.8kg with a 39cm head but it wasn’t even that bad! I used the mantra “this can’t be stronger than my body because IT IS my body” and that really kept me focused and realistic. Thanks so much for your wisdom! — Charlie – Opti-mum 1:1 Grad’
